From February 26th through March 8th, Venice will be transformed for its annual Carnival celebration. The city becomes a hive of activity and entertainment inspired by an annual theme.
This year’s themes is: Tribute to Unification of Italy and to Women.
2011 marks the 150th year since the unification of Italy and the coincidence of Mardi Gras with Women’s Day.
The Carnival of Venice – or Carnevale di Venezia – started as a time for celebration and expression throughout the classes.
In the strictly hierarchical Venetian society, it was deemed necessary to give the most humble classes the illusion of becoming similar to the more powerful classes. Wearing costumes and masks allowed Venetians and visitors alike to mingle anonymously.
Today, approximately 30,000 visitors come to Venice each day for the festivities.
St. Mark’s Square remains the heart of the Carnival, with its huge stage, although other events take place throughout the city, to help avoid an excessive build-up of people in pedestrian Venice.
